Animal Services Bureau

The mission of the Animal Services Bureau (ASB) is to provide service to the citizens and municipal workers of Hawthorne regarding all animal related issues.

The bureau is part of the Business License Department. The ASB is comprised of one supervisor, Carol Valberde, and field workers Helen Coronel and Evelyn Diaz. All three employees are on the 4-10 work schedule assuring 7 days/week coverage. ASB personnel will also be on-call after office hours for emergency call-outs.

The ASB will be responsible for enforcing all animal laws in the City of Hawthorne. Other duties include, but are not limited to: cruelty investigations, humane education, rabies control, dangerous and nuisance animal complaints, sick/injured animal rescue, deceased animal pick-up, stray animal impound, licensing, and assisting patrol, detectives, and special units as directed. The ASB will maintain a database to track all animals brought into the system. The ASB will collect all fees due the City for animal licensing, impound fees, services rendered, etc.

Sheltering of animals impounded or rescued by the ASB will be provided by the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control. If the ASB picks up a licensed animal we will hold it at the Police Department until just before the close of ASB business hours in order to attempt to have the owner claim their animal prior to the animal being transported to the LA County shelter.

The location of the L.A. County Animal Shelter is:
Los Angeles County Animal Control Shelter
216 W. Victoria
Gardena, CA 90248
(310) 523-9566

Additionally, pictures of recovered animals are posted on their website at;

The public should call the police dispatch center (RCC) number (310-675-4443) to report any animal related incident. RCC will contact the field workers to handle the incident. Call RCC after hours, also. RCC will contact the on-duty police watch commander who will determine if the ASB should be called out.
