Red Light Camera Enforcement in the City of Hawthorne

The City of Hawthorne began its Automated Red Light Camera Enforcement system on Friday, March 19, 2004. The first location for this program was at the intersection of El Segundo Blvd and Hawthorne Blvd. During the initial 30 days of the program there was a grace period, where violators were issued warnings instead of citations. The system began to issue actual citations on April 19, 2004. Motorists who receive a citation in the mail will receive detailed information specific to the violation. They are also offered an opportunity to view the photographic evidence with a police officer prior to their court date.

During the following months, a total of five of the cities most hazardous intersections were equipped with the Automated Red Light Camera Enforcement system. The program has been effective in several surrounding cities in reducing the number of red light violators and injury collisions.

The City of Hawthorne selected Redflex Traffic Systems Inc. to assist the Police Department with the Red Light Enforcement Program. For further details about Redflex and its products, visit their web site at www.redflex.com.
